Sixteen

We’re both awake early the following morning and a little after eight o’clock the ferry begins its approach to Sami. I gasp at the natural beauty of the horseshoe-shaped bay, flanked by pine trees and mountains as it looms into view. I can already spot restaurants and shops along the harbour-side and small fishing boats bobbing gently alongside yachts on the sparkling water. This is the place where Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed and it’s easy to see why such a stunning location was chosen. The harbour is bustling with tourists as we disembark, driving the van gently down the gangplank into the bright sunlight. I breathe deeply as I take in my surroundings, feeling so proud of myself that I finally made it here. I like to think that Dad would be proud of me too.

After parking the van in a nearby car park we walk back towards the harbour and glance around.

‘What a charming place,’ I say. Scanning the tavernas on the front, we choose one overlooking the water and settle beneath a cream canvas canopy for breakfast, ordering omelettes and coffee.

‘Well, we made it. How are you feeling?’ I ask Demi as she looks at a menu.

‘You know, I feel surprisingly good – calm, even, although I think that might be the effect of the travel sickness pills. They helped me sleep a lot. It feels so good to be back here in Greece, on solid ground at last.’ She takes a deep breath and exhales. ‘The sights and smells of the harbour take me right back to when I was young woman.’ She smiles as she glances towards a fishing boat where two men are bringing in a morning haul of fish, lost in her thoughts.

‘A penny for them?’

‘I was just daydreaming, remembering how your father charmed his way into getting a job on my uncle’s boat,’ she recalls. ‘I don’t think he realised how hard it would be. He told me his arms ached afterwards from hauling in the fish. I remember laughing and telling him that he was not as fit as he thought he was, but he said it was just because he was using different muscles.’ She picks at an olive from a small bowl that a waiter has just delivered to our table.

The sun glints on the water and we spend over an hour over our delicious breakfast, as we watch the colourful fishing boats and the busy passenger ferry in the harbour. The fluffy cheese omelette served with fat grilled tomatoes and washed down with good coffee is perfect. We sit and watch the tourists stroll by, looking for places to eat, some stopping outside souvenir shops, trying on straw hats and sunglasses, before we pay the bill and head off.

‘Are you ready to go? Or would you like to have a stroll around Sami first?’ I ask, not sure if Demi would just like to head straight to her village rather than delaying things.

‘Of course we must look around. You may never come here again,’ she insists.
